Why Steel-Shell Lithium Batteries Cost Less Than Polymer Ones

Polymer lithium batteries, by contrast, can be built on a range of cathode chemistries — lithium cobalt oxide, nickel cobalt manganese oxide, and occasionally lithium manganese oxide — or mixtures of them.

The decisive difference is manufacturing discipline: polymer batteries are subject to higher product requirements and far stricter process control, which is what drives their higher cost.
